About Hive

Hive is a community-centred participatory artwork inspired by the decline of pollinating insects and their importance in the environment. It is taking the form of a series of workshops, at the SEED Pop-up shop, and on location at schools and wellbeing groups. Participants will build a bee using a simple process that utilises textile cutting and threading skills. There is a simple pattern to follow for each bee type. Using Eco Fur fabric will offer participants a sensory experience promoting enjoyment in the making process. Using educational identification charts, makers will choose a bee type that reflects the variety of species in the Bridgwater area. All the bees will be collected during the workshop and used to hang a final artwork in the Pop-up shop in April. Bees can be taken home by participants after the final exhibition.
The creative and conceptual value of the project as an art piece is its focus on community participation, raising awareness of the need for inclusivity and ecological awareness in practice. The design of the final installation Swarm will reflect bees’ social choice and group intelligence within swam behaviours. It will be a site-specific installation, enhancing the locations and celebrating the collective-making process in Hive workshops.
A launch event will be organised on the opening Thursday, to promote the project and welcome participants to celebrate their achievements in the SEED Pop-up shop at the beginning of the exhibition in Angel Place.
This project will serve as an educational opportunity for the community and a catalyst for fostering connections between members from different social backgrounds. It will offer a sense of well-being through artistic expression.

Hive Workshops

Hive begins to hum in January 2025 with community outreach workshops with local businesses that focus on community care and education. Blossom in Somerset, Mind Charity, My Day Care, Brymore Academy, and SLaMS (Somerset Levels and Moors Men’s Shed) will make Bees for the exhibition. Hive is connecting with other local schools and charities too.

There will be two walk-in workshops in March. These are accessible to all at the SEED Pop-Up in Angel Place, Bridgwater.

Open workshops will be on:

Wednesday, March 5th 10.30 -2.30
Saturday, March 22nd 10.30 -2.30

Please pop-in and create a bee to join our community artwork and take home at the end of the final exhibition.

Creating a bee is easy, all the materials and tools are provided. Skills needed are cutting circles using templates and threading – there is help with the stitching part. Each bee has a worksheet pattern to follow.
Stop in – make a bee, learn about them, or find out how you can encourage them in your garden. We have resources and information to read and take away.
