Step into the lives of Traveller communities in Somerset with Born on the Wheels of a Wagon, an exhibition that shares their stories in their own words. Through striking portraits and first-person audio, you’ll hear about family, work, leisure, and the day-to-day realities of life on the road.
Originally shown at The Engine Room, the project brings together photography, interviews, and research led by local students, giving Travellers the space to speak for themselves. It highlights the history, culture, and resilience of Romani, Irish Traveller, and other Traveller communities in the South West, while challenging common stereotypes.
Opening at Angel Place’s Creative Popup in Bridgwater September 24th, the exhibition connects with local traditions like fairs and markets, celebrating the county’s long-standing Traveller heritage. It’s a chance to meet the people behind the stories, learn from their experiences, and see Somerset through their eyes.
Come explore the portraits, listen to the stories, and take part in a conversation that honours the culture, resourcefulness, and everyday lives of Travellers in the region.
