What Next Bridgwater? The Mural Story

Since Seed was initially set up the team has heard ideas for a big public art project in Bridgwater, such as a mural in a prominent public space. This is the story of how small ideas can become big projects!

In November 2024 Seed held an opportunity for the people of Bridgwater to come and tell us what sort of public art they would like. They were given the opportunity to explore and chat about different mural styles and share their creative ideas for the project.

Next up an artist callout was put out to the area. A group made up of Bridgwater residents, business owners, students and members of small local community groups. They made the final decision to give the task to Tom Sledmore, a Bristol based artist with years of practical experience with community co-creation, not to mention a unique art style!

Over the following weeks, Tom invited residents to join a series of workshops. These sessions brought together people of all ages and backgrounds to share stories, sketch ideas, and celebrate the town’s identity.

Together, participants helped shape a landmark public artwork: a vibrant 130-metre mural in Eastover. The mural now reflects Bridgwater’s rich history, dynamic present, and hopeful future capturing the voices and creativity of the community that inspired it.

From the Mercure Hotel to the Victoria Park Community Centre, every workshop buzzed with energy and imagination. The result is a piece of art that belongs to Bridgwater, created by and for its people.

Tom and his co-artists Aubrey and Val completed the project in June. The official unveiling took place on October 4th and the response from Bridgwater has been overwhelmingly positive!
