Update from The Chair – Claire Tough, Homes In Sedgemoor

It has been a very busy and productive time for Seed over the past six months or so, capped off by the exciting news that we have been successful in securing a funding extension from Arts Council England under the Creative People and Places programme.

On behalf of the Consortium I’d like to thank Scott, Laura, Elliott and Phil for their hard work on the programme and congratulate them on this successful application. This additional year means that we will keep working with communities across Sedgemoor to create new, inspiring and engaging opportunities for everyone to take part in creativity and the arts, until at least March 2026. We are also now working on a bid that will take us through to March 2029.

If you have been in Bridgwater over the past few months, you may have noticed some of these projects. Although we have been active in Bridgwater since 2020, from now until the end of 2025, we are particularly focused on the town. This includes the fantastic creative popup space in Angel Place which was launched with the Individuality Project. Facilitated by local artist Bridget Hemmings 1,400 people across Sedgemoor created representations of their individuality in clay and the resulting exhibition was visited by more than 2,500 people – and seen by many more thanks to extensive coverage by the BBC across all its platforms including Points West local news.  The team also heard from so many people all over Somerset about how inspired they were inspired by being part of the exhibition in their own way.

This was quickly followed by our hosting an amazing visit from the National Gallery which saw 1,500 people visit our Victorian-era style painting salon in the popup where 11 exact replicas of key paintings from the National Gallery were displayed.  Another 1,400 or so people visited the Gallery’s Art Road Trip Van which provided unique and very high-quality opportunities to get in touch with creativity, and participate in some hands-on art making.

But this was no flying visit. We are building a lasting legacy from this project as we forge a deeper relationship with the National Gallery. This includes a planned return road trip – with a heavily subsidised coach tour from Sedgemoor to visit the National Gallery with a guided tour in November, open to all. After the recent projects interest in the trip is in very high demand with spaces are filling up quickly. You can express an interest in going here

We also have 19 replica pictures from the collection available to display across the town over coming months in our Artscape project. You may have seen them in cafes, bus stops and on public and private buildings already. Watch out for more in coming weeks and the walking trail map to be launched soon. If you have a building or business in central Bridgwater and would like to display one of the pieces, do let us know.

The next Creative Popup Activity was in partnership with Bridgwater Town Deal. The space was set up with free creative activities at Angel Place for the half term, giving anyone in Bridgwater a chance to let us know what they think should be included, reflected and expressed in a mural that we hope can be a new and iconic public artwork for the town. This is in addition to the planned donation of ‘Jesse’, a community co-created sculpture of a gypsy cobb by artist Jake Bowers that so many of you helped to make by joining Jake at his forge at Bridgwater Fair last month.

Seed will also be expanding our focus to the nearby communities of North Petherton and Cannington. If you live in those areas and would like to join us in bringing more creativity to them, now is the time to reach out and let us know.

We look forward to meeting you soon!
