Making with me – Family workshops

Join a unique and enriching experience designed for parents with preschool-aged children! As a professional illustrator specializing in children’s books and a mother who navigated the challenges of early parenting during lockdown, I understand the value of connection and creativity. These free parent-and-baby drawing classes offer a relaxed, baby-friendly environment where parents can rediscover their creative side.

While children play and explore mess-free drawing materials like water-based tools, parents can enjoy guided observational drawing sessions, focusing on capturing moments with their little ones. This isn’t about creating perfect artwork but embracing the joy of the process and connecting through shared creativity.

These workshops are designed to meet the often-overlooked needs of new parents, particularly mothers who may feel isolated or time-poor. The classes foster connection, creativity, and positive wellbeing while encouraging collaborative experiences that benefit the whole family.

Rooted in my experience teaching observational drawing and hosting storytelling events, these sessions aim to build a sense of community among creatively-minded parents while exploring new ways for families to bond. Whether you’re seeking inspiration, support, or just a fresh way to engage with your child, these classes offer a meaningful, inclusive space for all.

A bit about me

I’m Katherine, an illustrator based in Somerset, I love to draw and I use a mix of both traditional and digital media to create my pencil illustrations, always with a focus on detail.

I became interested in narrative illustration and children’s books while studying Visual Communication at university in Birmingham. After graduating, I completed a residency in Illustration in the School of Visual Arts in New York. Shortly afterwards, I worked with independent publisher of local Scottish stories, ‘Serafina Press’ and in 2012 my first children’s book was published. I completed a second title with them in 2014.

In 2022, I decided to write and illustrate my own children’s book project, ‘Molly’s First Festival’, based on my own experiences as a festival-going mum. I self-published this in June 2023 after running a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. The book has since been featured on the children’s TV channel CBeebies, and has had a number of live readings at festivals, including Glastonbury, Camp Bestival and Valleyfest.
