If you had offered me the chance to watch a brass band concert, I probably wouldn’t have gone!

In 2021, we were finally emerging from the Covid lockdowns. My mum suggested going to our local park to see a band, playing at an event organised by Seed Sedgemoor. After being cooped up in the house for so long it was good to get out. I didn’t know what to expect but it was there that I saw (what I now know was) a sousaphone being played for the first time. It looked so unique, wrapping itself around the musician.

I can’t remember what music they played but I know I wanted to play the instrument. I didn’t really know what it was called and I asked my mum if I could learn the tuba. When one arrived on loan from the Somerset instrument library I was disappointed. It was not what I was expecting but I decided to learn it anyway.

My piano teacher encouraged me to join the King Alfred Concert band, a brass band which rehearses in Highbridge on a Saturday morning. Some are retired professional musicians but mostly they are people like me who learnt an instrument when they were young and play for fun. I am the youngest of about 30 members. At first, as I was new to sight reading, I wasn’t very quick and couldn’t play many notes but both my sight reading and my playing improved really quickly. This then led to other opportunities such as marching in the local Remembrance Day Parade. This is something I really enjoy doing and it means a lot to my community.

I was gifted a Euphonium that was made in 1914 and I realised I could pick up other instruments really quickly. After that I gained two guitars, a bugle, trombone, trumpet but still no sousaphone. recommended by my brass tutor, I attended an Easter course for young musicians and was invited to join Somerset County Youth Band. We play Easter, Christmas and Summer concerts at venues such as Wells Cathedral and the amazing Cedar Hall. More recently we partnered with the County Youth Orchestra to undertake a short tour of the Netherlands, which was great fun and the first time I’ve been abroad without my parents!

All of these opportunities has given me an understanding and appreciation of orchestral and brass music and I use this in my compositions. I’ve produced two albums of classical music as well as electronic dance music – you can hear them on Spotify and YouTube under the artist name Tycoonmoom.

A few weeks ago I joined the Sound of the Streets, another project supported by SEED Sedgemoor. Finally I got the chance to play a sousaphone! It felt so good to play it. This week we will be playing at Bridgwater Carnival, in front of hundreds of people and they have loaned me the instrument so I can march with it in this year’s Remembrance Day Parade. If you’ve never been before, do visit a SEED event. You never know where it might lead!

A Conversation with Chloe Haywood

SEED: Hi Chloe, thanks for sitting down to chat about your project! Can you tell first us what inspired Blossoming Bridgwater?

CHLOE: Of course! Blossoming Bridgwater is all about bringing people together to create something meaningful. I was inspired by the idea of storytelling through textiles—how fabric holds memories, identity, and history. I wanted to create a project where the community could contribute in a hands-on way, shaping a final piece that reflects their voices, creativity, and connection to Bridgwater. The idea of a giant, layered skirt felt like the perfect symbol of growth, transformation, and collaboration.

SEED: Why do you think collaboration, especially with the public in this case, is important in art?

CHLOE: Art isn’t just about the finished piece—it’s about the process, the conversations, and the shared experience of making. When people come together to create, it strengthens connections and gives everyone a sense of ownership. In Blossoming Bridgwater, every stitch, every fabric choice, and every design element comes from the people who take part. It’s a way of celebrating individuality while building something collective, which makes the final piece even more special.

SEED: What impact do projects like this have beyond the final piece?

CHLOE: The skirt will be a beautiful, tangible result, but what really matters is the journey. Projects like this inspire creativity, build confidence, and encourage people to try something new. They spark conversations, bring people together, and create lasting memories. There’s also a wider impact—learning new skills, understanding sustainability in fashion, and seeing how small individual contributions can add up to something big.

SEED: What can participants expect at the workshops?

CHLOE: A warm, welcoming, and relaxed space where they can get creative! We’ll be experimenting with different textile techniques, from hand-stitching and appliqué to fabric manipulation. People can bring their own ideas or work with patterns and materials we provide. No experience is needed—it’s all about playing with textures, colours, and shapes to contribute to the final piece. And most importantly, it’s free!

SEED: How has working with the Royal Opera House and Royal Ballet’s sustainability department influenced the project?

CHLOE: Working with them really reinforced how important it is to rethink materials and processes in fashion and costume design. They do incredible work finding sustainable solutions for stage productions, from repurposing old costumes to using eco-friendly dyes. That’s something I’ve brought into Blossoming Bridgwater—using second-hand fabrics, working with natural and upcycled materials, and encouraging people to think about the environmental impact of fashion.

SEED: How does the project encourage environmental responsibility?

CHLOE: We’re showing that sustainability and creativity go hand in hand. By using repurposed textiles and recycled materials, we’re giving fabric a new life instead of letting it go to waste. The workshops also encourage people to think differently about fashion—to see the value in reusing materials, repairing garments, and making thoughtful choices about what they wear. It’s a small step, but it’s about raising awareness and inspiring change.

Although we have been active in Bridgwater since 2020, from now until the end of 2025, we are particularly focused on the town. This includes the fantastic creative popup space in Angel Place which was launched with the Individuality Project. Facilitated by local artist Bridget Hemmings 1,400 people across Sedgemoor created representations of their individuality in clay and the resulting exhibition was visited by more than 2,500 people – and seen by many more thanks to extensive coverage by the BBC across all its platforms including Points West local news. The team also heard from so many people all over Somerset about how inspired they were inspired by being part of the exhibition in their own way.

This was quickly followed by our hosting an amazing visit from the National Gallery which saw 1,500 people visit our Victorian-era style painting salon in the popup where 11 exact replicas of key paintings from the National Gallery were displayed. Another 1,400 or so people visited the Gallery’s Art Road Trip Van which provided unique and very high-quality opportunities to get in touch with creativity, and participate in some hands-on art making.

But this was no flying visit. We are building a lasting legacy from this project as we forge a deeper relationship with the National Gallery. This includes a planned return road trip – with a heavily subsidised coach tour from Sedgemoor to visit the National Gallery with a guided tour in November, open to all. After the recent projects interest in the trip is in very high demand with spaces are filling up quickly. You can express an interest in going here

We also have 19 replica pictures from the collection available to display across the town over coming months in our Artscape project. You may have seen them in cafes, bus stops and on public and private buildings already. Watch out for more in coming weeks and the walking trail map to be launched soon. If you have a building or business in central Bridgwater and would like to display one of the pieces, do let us know.

Hi! My name is Lara Putt, I’m 22 years old and grew up and live near Bridgwater close to the gorgeous Quantock Hills. Since I was young, I’ve been fascinated by art and later turned my fascination towards pottery. I’ve always thought there’s something magical about taking raw clay and turning it into something beautiful and functional with your hands. My journey into ceramics has been one of constant learning, and I’m always looking for ways to challenge myself and experiment with new styles and techniques.

On Saturday the 2nd of November I had the chance to be part of an arts popup event called Create the Future, held at Angel Place Shopping Centre right here in Bridgwater. It was a fantastic opportunity to display my work and connect with the local community, sharing the joy and craft of ceramics with everyone who came by. When I heard about Create the Future, I knew it would be the perfect place to meet other creative people, get inspired and inspire others!

I set up my wheel and was immediately shown interest by passers by wondering what was going on — I loved being able to talk to people about the processes involved in ceramics and how each piece was made.

I absolutely loved giving demonstrations and teaching lots of curious children how to throw on the wheel, not to mention being surprised by their enthusiasm and skill! I think they really enjoyed being able to make something themselves whilst also getting their hands mucky (who wouldn’t!).
The idea had been a dream for Sharon (our lead teacher for many years), our ethos was that we wanted to provide affordable and easily accessible dance and drama.

The area had a number of dance schools or theatre clubs that, if you could afford £60 a term you could send your children to work through lessons, achieve levels and get certificates. We wanted something different, something truly for Highbridge.

So with the help of SEED, The Arts Council and later on the Town Council we put together HYA. Like all great things it was built around the kitchen table and from the scribbles and coffee stains, there emerged a CIC with volunteers, funding, places to hold sessions and above all else a burning desire to give Highbridge something good. The early sessions were challenging, we were over subscribed, grappling with COVID risk assessments, helping children to be together again while at the same time telling them they had to stay within their marked out circles (ropes on the floor was our solution!). Before we knew it we were putting a short piece together and the children performed at BOSFest in the park on a Sunday. In all my years of music gigs I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous as that day but oh boy did they smash it, so many happy faces!

At HYA the creativity comes from the children, fees are voluntary, £2 a week. This has allowed us to reach children who otherwise wouldn’t access the arts. Inclusivity and community are key to us, we have several special needs children and they are just part of the gang, doing the same as everyone else. We have a solid group who come week in, week out, even in -6 degree temperatures. They challenge us as teachers to do more, grab their ideas and help them interpret, create, script, choreograph and perform. We don’t have rules, codes of conduct or other nonsense but we do have boundaries and respect which makes for a solid friendship group and children doing things because they really want to. The children have learnt how to support each other, develop confidence, ease anxiety and engage in their community.

The last 11 years of this, I was a headteacher in a school on the Quantocks in Somerset. As my years in education ended, I never dreamt that I would have a career in ceramics – which I would also love! I spent the first eighteen months of this new path learning the trade from two different tutors and a lot of research and trials and tribulations with clay, working mostly with porcelain. My pieces became popular and my business began to take off!

During this time, I was also the chair of Cheddar Artists, an annual walking trail. Along with the committee, we applied for funding and worked to create permanent art installations in Cheddar eg willow soay sheep. I always felt that it would be great to have a permanent walking trail in Cheddar. With this in mind, I applied for a commission from Seed Sedgemoor to do just this, and, in 2022 I was commissioned to lead the first project.

We set up a team of three ceramicist and an event organiser: Bridget Hemmings, Ella Phillips, Lucy Brown and Heidi Shakespeare. Together we ran over 50 workshops and engaged over 1,000 participants. Once all the figures were completed, we hosted a one day exhibition where all of the figures came together. It was wonderful to see everyone’s creativity and hard work come together. Following this all of the figures became a walking trail in Cheddar gorge and village over the Summer of 2023. It was truly amazing to have over 8,000 visits during that time!

Cheddar Individuality Project – Come Home

Following the Cheddar individuality Project, so many participants expressed an interest in making ceramic figures that they could keep. So, in the Autumn of 2023 we ran 10 workshops when people could come along and make a ceramic figure to take them home. Once they were finished, participants could collect their figures and keep them. In this project 113 figures were created.

Now this year brings the start of the individuality Project. The intention of this project is to; work with the community and bring people together, encourage people who may be isolated to take part, teach participants new skills and encourage creativity, also to create a walking trail in Bridgwater, Highbridge and outlying villages.

Already the Highbridge workshops are generating a lot of interest and we are working to add more and more workshops all the time. I look forward for more members of the wider Sedgemoor community to experience the workshops, getting together and expressing their individual creativity!

Individuality Project – Spring 2024

This project came to life in Spring 2024. We ran 7 workshops in Highbridge and Bridgwater and now have over 100 figures made, fired and stored away.

It has been great to meet new communities. The workshops in Highbridge were at St John’s Church Hall and The Morland Hub. Then in Bridgwater we ran two workshops in Victoria Park Community Centre and also a workshop at the Welcome Hub in North Petherton.

Watching different groups of people come together for a workshop has been rewarding. Seeing how different people approach the task and create together, in family groups or friendships groups. Sometimes meeting new people and making new friendships. I am always fascinated to see how people interpret the task – “to make a human figure or how they see themselves” For example, we had one figure which had four faces. This was showing how they feel about themselves at different times, on different days. A mother with four children had her children attached to her figure along with her personal interests; a keyboard to show she is musical and a mortar on her head to represent the degree that she just completed. In another workshop one lady wanted to represent her two grandchildren. She came along with ideas and made the most intricate figure which took her over two hours. Luckily all of these survived in the kiln.

In the project we are using 5 different types of clay so in each workshop we use one type of clay. This is to reflect our society. Once the figures are displayed together it reflects even more our individuality.

This week we reached 200 figures for the Individuality Project. Which means we are two thirds of the way to our goal. Unbelievably each workshop is still unique and the creativity and talent of the participants is wonderful – truly showing that we are all unique.

Not long after I arrived to take up my post at St John’s, I was walking around the parish, getting a feel for the place, its story and people. My little band, Mossflower, would handle the house band duties, and after a couple of intensive rehearsals learning blues classics and a few obscure gems, we were all set – musically at least.

At the same time, Jane MacPherson at the Morland Hub let me know about Seed.

A zoom call with Laura at Seed revealed that they loved the idea and wanted to pursue it further. What followed was a big learning curve in terms of applying for a Seed commission, getting the premises license to run a bar, as well as doing a lot of advertising and networking. The church got behind it with permission and people power, and Seed were supportive every step of the way. Ollie Davies, a great local sound engineer and musician, was on hand to help in many ways. The first night, held back in September 2021, was a huge success and we’ve been hosting the event monthly ever since. We have also run a masterclass, and a weekend of workshops in the first year – many of which sold out – and we are running another such weekend in May 2024.

What amazes me about Blues in the Pews is the range and depth of local talent, as well as visitors from further afield. No two months are the same. Blues has developed into a very inclusive space, where musicians from 8 to 80 can get up and have a go – and where sometimes the younger musicians are the more experienced!

People have found an opportunity to learn new performance skills, or to get back into skills they thought they’d forgotten. It’s also been a place where people of different levels of need and ability can get involved. Two of our regulars have additional needs, and come along with their carers. They often sing a nursery rhyme (given a suitably blues-ifed backing by the band) and it brings the house down. One of our participants, a young man who lives with schizophrenia, recently spoke movingly in a BBC Radio 4 interview, about how Blues in the Pews helps his self-expression and opportunities to for socialising.

We’re not purists about the blues genre; we interpret it generously. Blues just provides an simple framework with variations that almost any musician can join in with. The genre understandably attracts a certain number of middle-aged blokes – and we love them! But we’re also delighted that a growing cohort of female performers now come along too and show us how it’s done.

We’ve worked hard to foster this inclusive atmosphere – but at the same time, I think it’s also happened naturally because of the values and beliefs of those who run the event. Someone confessed to me that when they came at first they were worried that, because it’s in a church, there might be a veiled attempt to interest people in religion. But when he actually come along and experienced it, his fears were soon allayed. From my perspective, Blues in the Pews shows what can happen with different areas of a local community emerge from their siloes and find they have a whole lot in common: good music, kindness, decent beer and a great night out. Plus, you know, that mysterious thing that is life itself.
